The 42-year-old Lijnders was one of Klopp’s most trusted assistants. The Dutchman arrived at Anfield during Brendan Rodgers’ time and then remained under Klopp. He left Liverpool twice in pursuit of head coach opportunities – first with NEC (January 2018) and then with Red Bull Salzburg (May 2024). However, both stints ended in failure and he was dismissed on both occasions.
French spent 13 seasons at Liverpool as an opposition analyst. He holds Portuguese citizenship and has previously worked in Scotland and Wales.
Guardiola was seeking new assistants after parting ways with three of his staff at the end of the season. Lijnders and French will begin their jobs immediately as Manchester City fly to the USA to take part in the Club World Cup, starting on 14th of June.
